Transitions Partners with Medical Associations to Underline Sun Protection

At the Transitions Academy 2017, Orlando Florida, a partnership with the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) and the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) was announced.

The partnership will spearhead a sun safety message to consumers underlined by the medical authority of both Ophthalmologists and Dermatologists.

The messaging will focus on eye sun protection awareness as UV light poses risk to structures both within and around the eye.

Transitions Optical is supporting the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) with an unrestricted educational grant to fund an Eye Sun Awareness Campaign designed to help educate Canadians on the eye health risks associated with UV radiation and how to protect themselves.

The CDA partnered in the launch of a sun safety at work website in September 2016 (www.sunsafetyatwork.ca) focusing on the 1.5 million Canadians exposed to sun at work who have a 3.5 x higher incidence skin cancer than indoor workers.

Symposium on Retinopathy of Prematurity Treatment Options

The Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) has devoted a mini-symposium to the latest developments and new techniques for treating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ROP is a leading cause of blindness in children, but with modern medicine, 90% of afflicted infants can expect favourable outcomes.

The issue (Volume 20, Issue 6) opens with a call to end ROP through “a revolution in diagnosis, management and prevention.”

“We are fortunate to have a community of scientists devoted to working on a leading cause of blindness in children,” said Journal of AAPOS Editor-in-Chief William V. Good, MD, The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco, CA. “Look how far we have come, thanks to the hard work of so many. It’s time to consider the real possibility that this condition can be eliminated. When that happens, we will have achieved nothing short of a miracle.”

The symposium contains a review from Michael Chiang on the latest advancements in telemedicine, allowing experts to diagnose ROP remotely.

Dr. David K. Wallace reviews the available intravitreal anti-VEGF treatments for ROP, including bevacizumab (Avastin), ranibizumab (Lucentis), pegapatanib (Macugen) and aflibercept (Eylea).

Dr. Mintz-Hittner writes about her research on intravitreal treament with bevacizumab for ROP.

All articles from the mini-symposium are available to freely access from the JAAPOS website (http://www.jaapos.org/issue/S1091-8531(16)X0007-9 ).

Canadian Eye Care Business Review – Launch Announcement

Dr.-Tina-Goodhew-Profile-150x150Dr-Jeff-Goodhew-Profile-150x150Today marks a landmark day for eye care in Canada. The launch of the very first business focussed publication geared towards Canadian EyeCare providers. Both of us are extremely excited to be involved in this initiative. It is our view that this platform will address a need that has gone unmet for too long, namely, Canadian focused practice management tactics and advice.

For years, we have had to rely on content from our colleagues south of the border, while excellent in its own right, often times it is not applicable to a Canadian setting. Our goal over the coming months is to bring a Canadian perspective to the running of a successful eye care practice. Stories from your peers and thought leaders here in this country will help you shape and form your practice ensuring your practices’ success for years to come.

Eye care in this country and all over the world is changing faster than ever. Being an excellent clinician is no longer the sole ingredient for success. We spend countless hours improving our clinical acumen to deliver the best patient care possible but we often times neglect the business aspect of the practice.

Why is that? Well, that part of running a practice is hard for us, the entrepreneurial spirit required to do so is not typically found in the OD’s DNA.  The ability to continue to provide the highest level of patient care hinges upon maintaining a successful and viable practice. Canadian Eye Care Business Review is here to help!

We also want to thank the sponsors of this initiative who’s participation will be key to its success. By becoming involved they are contributing to our learning and advancement.  A special thanks goes out to Carl Zeiss, J & J Vision Care, FramesData and the other sponsors whose presence you will see throughout this publication.

As this publication begins it’s journey we will endeavor to bring you practical business advice and tactics from your Canadian peers that you can begin to implement into your practice immediately. Like you, we face the same challenges and market forces on a daily basis, by collaborating together and sharing best practices we help ensure that Optometry not only survives in the future but thrives!
