Canadian OD Chosen as President-Elect of the World Council of Optometry

Dr. Scott MundleDr. Scott Mundle, of the Henderson Vision Centre in Winnipeg, became president-elect of the World Council of Optometry. He will take office in 2017 after the term of the new president, Uduak Udom of Nigeria. The announcement was made at the World Congress of Optometry in Medellin, Colombia.

Dr. Mundle was president of the Manitoba Association of Optometrists from 1992 to 1993, and of the Canadian Association of Optometrists from 2002 to 2004. In an interview with Vuepoint, Dr. Mundle stated his wish as president to tackle two challenges in particular: to increase the number of optometry schools, and to improve legislation in the many countries where there is no legal recognition of the optometric profession.

The current president of the WCO is Dr. Susan Cooper, of Brampton, Ontario.

OSI Announces New CEO

PATRICE_LACOSTEDr. Carol Marois, Chairman of the Board of Optometric Services Inc. (OSI), is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Patrice Lacoste as CEO. He will also be part of Sécuro Vision’s Board of Directors, an OSI subsidiary.

Mr. Lacoste holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of McGill as well as an MBA from Montreal’s HEC. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Mr. Lacoste joined OSI this past February as Executive Vice-President. Before joining the company, he was President of Québec Loisirs.

Founded in 1983, OSI is Canada’s largest network of independent optometrists. With total sales of nearly $200M per year and over 150 employees between head office and its subsidiaries, the company is the buying group of choice to roughly 1,500 optometrists in over 750 clinics across Canada.

OSI developed a complete line of products and services in order to meet the unique needs of its clients. The company developed one of the most recognized bilingual clinic management software on the market and ensures its development, sales and support. OSI also holds its own Marketing Agency, which offers tailored services to its clinics and suppliers thanks to its extensive industry knowledge.

OSI is also associated with Optometrists in operating the OptoPlus banner that includes over 25 clinics spread across major cities in Quebec.

VSP’s Mobile Eyes Clinic Comes to Canada

VSP Vision Care Canada’s “Mobile Eyes” mobile eye care clinic is visiting three locations in GTA from August 27-29 offering a free, full, eye exam and eyewear to patients in their first ever charitable outreach in Canada.

Founded in 2005 to help with disaster relief following Hurricane Katrina, Mobile Eyes is a state-of the-art vision clinic and dispensary on wheels which works with local FYidoctors to offer free vision care as they tour different cities when not required for disaster relief.

Working with local partners United Way Toronto, and with a streamlined process that allows them to see a patient every twenty minutes, they expect to offer over 150 patients free, comprehensive, eye exams and eyewear over the three day period. For prescription eyewear, the frames were donated by Marchon Canada and lenses from VSP Optics Group.
