CooperCompanies Publishes 2022 ESG Report, Shares Progress on Creating Value for Stakeholders

CooperCompanies released its 2022 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report. It highlights the company’s progress on social and environmental issues most important to its businesses and stakeholders, including employees, shareholders, customers, and global communities.

In 2022, CooperCompanies manufactured a record number of products while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 7%. A big contributor to this success was the start of the operation of a combined heat and power (CHP) facility in Puerto Rico. The company expects the CHP system to help significantly reduce its carbon footprint in the coming years.

“At CooperCompanies, we are committed to working diligently to positively impact the world around us,” said Al White, President and CEO of CooperCompanies. “In 2022, we continued making great progress and we’re proud of the success we’ve had, and the direction in which we’re moving. Conducting business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner is important to our long-term business success, and to the future of our planet.”

The 2022 ESG Report includes expanded and updated ESG performance data and provides stories across the company’s ESG pillars: People, Planet, and Partnerships. The report is aligned with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Standards, a leading framework that identifies important ESG issues most relevant to investors.

The Energy is Back at Vision Expo East

By Jean-François Venne

Vision Expo East (VEE) was back with a vengeance at the Javits Center in Manhattan from March 16 to 19. Some 425 exhibitors were on site to showcase their new products to thousands of attentive visitors.

The exhibition was split up into seven neighbourhoods on one level four of which were dedicated to frames. The Park featured the industry’s most renowned and iconic brands, while The Spring presented the work of new companies founded in the last five years. The Union (Etnia Barcelona, Lafont, Orgreen, etc.) and The Atelier (Matsuda, Garrett Leight, J.F. Rey, Anna-Karin Karlsson, etc.) both displayed trendsetting eyewear from designers.

Innovations from manufacturers of lenses, coatings, contact lenses, equipment and treatments for eye diseases were found in The Focus and Panorama neighbourhoods. The Panorama represents the latest innovation at Vision Expo. It spotlights cutting-edge technologies in the optical industry and the tech companies that have entered the industry in recent years.

Asian suppliers – which remain prominent in the industry despite U.S.-China tensions and supply issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic – were, meanwhile, gathered in the Look East neighbourhood.

Music and Awards

The now-famous rock band Bad Habits, comprised of several practicing optometrists, hosted the opening event held at the Paramount Hotel’s Sony Hall. And New York’s largest rooftop terrace, the 230 Fifth Rooftop, hosted the ODs on Facebook Fluorescene Party. Two great ways to kick off the festivities.

Visitors were expected to recover quickly from their evening, however, as VEE was again offering more than 300 hours of continuing education this year, which covered business strategies, new technologies and patient care.

Several speakers were also invited, including Jason Romero, an ultramarathon runner who became legally blind as a result of a degenerative disease. He crossed the United States on foot in 60 days, covering almost 83 km a day to reach the end of this journey of almost 5,000 km. Needless to say, he set a record! His address entitled “Challenge to Change” could be heard at The Bridge on March 18. The Bridge also hosted a series of panel discussions and lectures in the heart of the exhibition. Located in The Bridge, the Innovation Stage showcases the industry’s most ground-breaking products and services.

The VEE is also an opportunity to honour those who have distinguished themselves in the industry, most notably through the inaugural NOW Awards. Each exhibitor was invited to enter one sample of their most recent innovations in frames, lenses or lens technologies. More than 100 companies and 180 brands participated in the competition, submitting products to eight different categories. The winners were announced on March 18.

The next major industry event in the U.S. is Vision Expo West, which will be held in Las Vegas from September 27 to 30, 2023.

Optical Vision Group to Launch Optical Warehouse Franchising Concept in Canada

The Optical Vision Group is taking its next big step by focusing on continuing the Canadian expansion of its Optical Warehouse/Entrepôt de la Lunette optical stores, with a franchising concept carefully developed to attract optometrists, opticians and other qualified investors.

“Our Everything You Need, Simply Less Expensive™ concept, which was developed in Quebec, resonates with glasses wearers in all provinces,” says Daniel Beaulieu, President and CEO of Optical Vision Group. “In and outside of Quebec, we see the public’s anticipation of our arrival in major cities across Canada, and we wish to build a national network to cater to the increasing demand for affordable eyeglasses that we see from coast to coast.”

The franchising opportunity is based on the retail strategy that has been developed and perfected by the group over the past 10 years. “Investors are very interested in the low-cost franchising proposition and the potential return on investment over a five-year period,” Beaulieu says.

“Our high quality product assortment and offering, which includes a Best Price Policy on all lenses, frames starting at just $20, and a complete pair with anti-glare starting at $70, are exciting for independent practice owners who have an option that allows them to be very competitive.”

Franchisees benefit from associating themselves with a growing brand that has a customized marketing program, established supply chain, ongoing training support, and a concept that has won the Radisson award presented by the Trois-Rivières Chamber of Commerce for New Business in 2016 and been recognized by the Quebec Chamber of Commerce as a Mercuriades finalist for Successful Business Strategy in 2018.
