B + L Reports More Than 65 Million Units of Contact Lens, Eye Care and Lens Care Materials Recycled Through Recycling Programs

Bausch + Lomb

Bausch + Lomb announced its exclusive ONE by ONE and Biotrue® Eye Care Recycling programs have recycled a total of 65.8 million units, or 397,194 pounds, of used contact lenses, eye care and lens care materials, which is equivalent to the weight of three commercial-sized airplanes.

“Contact lenses, eye care and lens care materials are often not processed in standard recycling facilities due to their small size and the type of plastic used to manufacture them. As a result, they can potentially end up in landfills or waterways and contribute to plastic pollution,” said Amy Butler, vice president, Global Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability, Bausch + Lomb.

The ONE by ONE Recycling program has collected more than 65 million units of used contact lenses, top foils and blister packs since its launch in 2016. The Biotrue® Eye Care Recycling program, the first and only eye care recycling program in the United States that launched in 2021, has collected more than 440,000 eye drop single dose units, lens cases and lens solution caps, as well as Biotrue® Hydration Boost lubricant eye drops multi-dose bottles.

Bausch + Lomb has a similar contact lens recycling program in Canada called Every Contact Counts. For more information visit www.bausch.ca/en-ca/every-contact-counts.

CORE Demonstrates Advanced 3D Printing for Ocular Research at ARVO 2023

Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE)

Scientists from the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) are poised to unveil multiple advancements in 3D printing next week during the ARVO 2023 Annual Meeting in New Orleans. These innovations have widespread applications, with the potential to accelerate development of drug delivery systems, biodegradable contact lenses, and pharmaceuticals.

“Our multidisciplinary team has created one of the most sophisticated 3D printing environments for ocular research in the world,” said Alex Hui, OD, PhD, FAAO, head of Biosciences at CORE. “This investment in people and technologies is opening doors for new discoveries, product validation, and clinical insights, with so many implications for enhancing vision.”

CORE’s scientific poster presentations at ARVO span several interlinked aspects of three-dimensional modeling. Three related works focus on a new, CORE-developed method to rapidly fabricate PDMS (polydimethyl siloxane) microfluidic chips at a low cost and with high throughput. These chips are used to test ocular cellular responses to various conditions, formulations, and materials. Researchers were able to incorporate human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs), which showed strong adherence, metabolic activity, and growth capability, indicating the viability of chip-based cell biological studies.

CORE also fabricated a PDMS microfluidic chip for evaluating contact lens-based drug release. ARVO organizers have designated “Fabrication of a Microfluidic Chip for Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Studies Using 3D Printing” (Ramasamy M., et al.) as a scientific highlight for the entire conference.

Another CORE program to be shared in New Orleans developed a biodegradable bioink for fabricating ophthalmic devices. A novel gelatin methacrylate (GelMA)-centric formulation was used with a commercial masked-stereolithography (mSLA) 3D printer, with the resulting material assessed for degradation. Investigators also fabricated a contact lens from the same material, without requiring any support structures during printing.

In a quest to better evaluate ocular drug delivery, CORE scientists designed a soft hydrogel eye model, including an upper and lower eyelid, a frontal surface to mimic the cornea and sclera, and an internal chamber to mimic the interior of the eye. The eyeball and the lower eyelid were 3D bioprinted, then fit to a CORE-created in vitro OcuBlink device for automated blinking and tear collection. The outcomes supported the method for testing that more closely mimics a human ocular system, especially for drug absorption through the cornea.

THE Myopia Meeting Coming to Vancouver

VANCOUVER - THE Myopia Meeting

Following a successful Canadian debut in Toronto last November, THE Myopia Meeting (TMM) Canada is heading west to Vancouver, BC, on June 11, 2023.

THE Myopia Meeting is a full day event, focused exclusively on the topic of myopia management. The event includes 4 hours of COPE-accredited continuing education courses presented by experts in the field.

THE Myopia Meeting Canada
TMM Vancouver Registration is Now Open

Additionally, clinical reviews will cover the latest diagnostic and monitoring technologies along with the newest myopia control treatments. Break times, and the free lunch will provide attendees with peer-to-peer networking opportunities.

The day promises to be of tremendous value for eye care professionals who are either starting a myopia management practice or growing an existing one.

Clinical and Practice Management Aspects Covered

Optometry practice management expert, Dr. Gary Gerber co-founder of Treehouse Eyes, will kick off the CE program promising to reveal the two sentences needed to grow a Myopia Management Practice.

Vancouver-based Dr. Sherman Tung will deliver a 1-hour course entitled, “Orthokeratology Advanced Grand Rounds.” Dr. Tung was honoured as BC Optometrist of the Year in 2019.

Dr. Habir Sian, a prolific and passionate patient and practitioner educator and co-owner of two Vancouver area practices, will share his advice on implementing a myopia management practice.

The Continuing Education agenda will be rounded out by Program Chair, Review of Myopia Management Chief Medical Editor, Dr. Dwight Ackerman. Each of these courses are COPE-accredited.

Clinical reviews from the event Gold Sponsors, including CooperVision, HOYA, and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, will be interspersed with the CE, keeping the pace lively and providing ample opportunity for networking.

The registration cost is $80.

THE Myopia Meeting Canada is  presented by Review of Myopia Management and GMAC (Global Myopia Awareness Coalition) which is comprised of a number of companies and associations partnering  globally to increase public awareness of childhood myopia, the risk of eye disease associated with myopia, and encourage consumers to ask their eye care professionals about treatment options for childhood myopia.

CRO (Clinical & Refractive Optometry) Journal is the COPE-administrator for this event.

Registration for this event is now open.

TMM will be returning to Toronto on December 2, 2023. Circle the date.

Blue Point Acquires eyebobs, Setting Its Sights on Expanded Eyewear Platform

Blue Point Capital Partners announces the acquisition of eyebobs, a market leader in premium reading glasses. The investment is part of the firm’s broader plan to build a unique eyewear platform designed for B2B and B2C growth.

eyebobs joins Blue Point’s newly formed eyewear holding company following the firm’s March 2023 platform investment in Europa Eyewear.

Recognized for its distinctive style and art-worthy eyewear, eyebobs was founded in 2001 to address the gap between inexpensive readers sold in the mass market and designer frames sold by optical retailers. eyebobs began with a mission to “create original readers for original people” and has since transformed into a successful omnichannel brand with an exceptional product design aesthetic and a highly engaged customer base.

“We see tremendous opportunity for growth in the eyewear market and could not be more pleased to have Europa and eyebobs as part of our portfolio. The combined strength of these well-established companies will allow us to unlock growth for both organizations by leveraging their proprietary brands, leading design capabilities and differentiated B2B and B2C models,” said Blue Point Partner John LeMay.

“Europa and eyebobs have highly complementary capabilities, as well as like- minded cultures and values, making this investment a natural next step in the development of our eyewear platform,” said Blue Point Operating Executive Holly Rush. “eyebobs’ distinct brand and value-proposition truly resonate with consumers. With the capabilities and strengths of Europa, we believe this is a powerful combination poised to expand the brand’s reach and capture significant growth opportunities.”
